A little bit of colour....

I have been neglecting my little blog. I have a post about our weekend away to Northumberland started and will try to get that finished some time soon.I have also started a couple of times to write about the whole Badman thing. To be perfectly honest I have been overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information.I have kept up to date reading lists and blogs and by the time I have done that and tried to assimilate the info my brain has been fried,it really is energy sapping and I don't have much to spare:-/

Although I haven't felt able to write about it, I have signed the petitions and done a lot of  the things that have been suggested .The local home ed group had a meeting with our MP.We had two meetings beforehand to go through the review and discuss the points we wanted to raise and although I was on holiday and couldn't make it I sent him a lengthy letter.I am in awe and send my thanks for the work that has been done by so many home edders to publicise and inform about the process.

Things are ticking along here, we have had a quiet period after the hols.

Milly decided she would have her hair cut and coloured.

She had been resisting brushing it for days at a time and then we had major trauma when it needed to be washed .She was not keen to have it washed at all but didn't want it to get so tangled that it couldn't be brushed out. She didn't want it to go into dreads and was scared that she would have to have it cut off really short because of the tangles so would wash it periodically.Anyhow after the last wash she decided she would like to put a colour on and then the day before she was due to have it done she said she would have some cut off! We bought a temporary dye and the hairdresser that comes to the house to do Alans hair put it on and cut it for her.

                                                                    Before

After.

Now she loves it so much she wants another couple of inches off.

No more tears when brushing!!

Happy Halloween...

A busy day today,we had lots of little things to do.Alan set about putting together two playmobile castles.Emily had one and  A (our nephew) had brought his over one day. They had dismantled them and made one big castle. Now they both want to sell them and all we had was a bag of pieces and one that A had put together and then informed us we had some parts missing to  make up the second:-/

As it turned out (after Alan had nearly finished putting the second one together ) A had been creative and added an extra storey to a tower on the castle and that's where the spare parts were! Anyhow good job done and now ready for sale.

Emily and I  pottered around ,she sat with me whilst I carved her design out of the pumpkin.Milly decided last year after doing one herself that she really doesn't like the smell or texture, but does still like to design the face and See it lit up.

Some more reading up on Wolves for Emily.

We went to the library and while Emily was looking at the audio books I asked the assistant if they had any books on wolves.I had just requested books with mainly photos in and at this point Emily came back and declared that she wanted books with lot's of facts and information as she really wanted to know more about them! It's happening slowly but surely. She is voluntarily picking books up and reading /scanning and then sharing her found info with us and others:-)

We were heading off to a friends house for a party this evening and Al would be left to hand out treats so I made up a tray and added a few touches to the hall. A bit feeble, but as usual I leave things til the last minute! Every year I think about decorating and this is the first year I have done anything at all so a move in the right direction:-))

Emily and Al went off for a walk whilst I had a bath and got ready. Then full on prep following her design, for Vampire Emily!
She looks soooo grown up!!

We enjoyed a really good party.Tom and her family had created a great atmosphere and put in a huge amount of work. This would have been exceptional under normal circumstances but the last two weeks have been really hard, a close family member has been very ill in hospital and Maria has spent a great deal of time camped out at the hospital.Tom (Emily) and her boyfriend N had worked really hard at their costumes and the plans for food etc.So a very big thank you for a great evening. Milly enjoyed herself enormously and the treasure hunt in the dark had them all buzzing!!

Back home and just one more group of trick or treaters for Emily to hand out sweets.

Found this little fella in the living room when we got back with his nose in a book!! Seems he was keen to find out what happened next in the Lady Grace Mystery:-)

After changing to this new blogger posting thingy I was moaning about the lack of spellcheck.Googled for online spellcheck the other day and found the google toolbar with spellcheck option:-))

Art appreciation :-)

I took Emily along for a session of cranial osteopathy this morning. It meant getting up and out for 10.30 . I know this should not be a problem, plenty of time to get up at 9.00 and be out on time ,surely ? Well, add in to the equation very long hair that hasn't been brushed for three days and a tired and emotional Emily and the process took rather longer than anticipated:-/

By the time we left the house good spirits were restored, thankfully!

We got to the clinic on time and sat in the waiting room. As we had a few minutes to wait Emily took out one of her notebooks(at least one is taken on any outing)and started going through it to find a clean page. There were many pages of drawings of the "lady's" she likes to draw and also (a new departure) a comic strip story about one of them ,and a few pages full of her stories. She eventually found a clean page. The lady sitting next to me had obviously watched her go through the book, she lent over to me and with a smile said,

"I  do believe she will make her living doing that" I answered that I believed that too:-) She went on to tell us about her son, a graphic designer, who has worked for some top companies. She said that when he was about Emily's age he was the same and would draw the same things over and over again. He had his own style and a passion for doing it. At school coming up to A level exams, the art teacher told the parents that he would never be able to earn a living from it!

She was very taken with Emily's individual style. She said so many people see good drawing as art and that there is so much more to it than being able to draw a figure perfectly or to be able to copy a picture.True individuality is much rarer than people who can draw well. She encouraged Emily to keep following her passion and to believe in herself.

She made my day! I hope Emily took something from the conversation and that she might think twice before comparing her endeavours to other peoples work.

A bargain to solve a problem.

Some time ago I began the great declutter project! The aim was to clear any unused furniture, toy’s (with Milly's permission) basically anything that wasn't being used and that would be unlikely to be used.I wanted to ensure every part of every room was used to it's full potential .I was quite ruthless and it involved changing the way we used all the rooms downstairs. In the dining room I made this little area for Emily to use with things out on the shelves so she could see (and hopefully) be inspired:-)

It worked quite well initially, but the biggest problem was the unit was really low down and uncomfortable to actually work on.

It has been quite a while since that was set up. Now that I have finished in the other rooms, I revisited this area. I decided we needed a craft type area, with space for masterpieces to be written and illustrated. We went off today to Impact housing(recycled furniture) and low and behold the perfect desk for £20!A couple of hours later we had it cleaned down and set up with the tools of the trade for a storyteller:-)

Hearty autumn soup.

I have been very pleasantly surprised by the recipes I have been using from weightwatchers.Just had a lovely thick warming soup for lunch and thought I would share it:-)

This is my version of the recipe. The wightwatchers one uses curry powder and spray oil for a no point soup but I prefer the paste as I think it gives a deeper flavour and  I count my version as one point.

1 butternut squash peeled and chopped into small cubes
2 red onions peeled and quartered
mix in a large bowl with a couple teaspoons of dried rosemary and a tablespoon of olive oil
spread onto a roasting tray and bake in the oven (around 190 in my fan oven) for 45 mins,
dont worry if it browns a bit this will add to the flavour.

When cooked, place in a saucepan.I then mix stock using veg stock cubes and a couple of tablespoons of Pataks balti paste. The amount of stock varies depending on the size of squash but I put in enough to cover the veg by a couple of inches.Bring to the boil and then simmer for a round 20 mins, blitz with a hand blender and enjoy:-)

Will add some more at a later date.I am making a pearl barley chicken rissoto tonight, so if it is any good I will add it here xx

Holiday photo post.

The horrible caravan park that looked a bit like a concentration camp had a rather lovely beach 500 metres away =D
Bear in mind that most folk walking had three layers on.She went prepared with cossie on, got to the beach, threw off her clothes and off she went.
Milly in heaven.

A visit to Kelburn Castle. After lunch we went exploring,The Secret Forest was a big hit:-)Whilst exploring the adventure playground Tom managed to get stuck on a platform at one point. She bravely faced her fears!Great fun was had in and out of fairy houses and mazes within the forest. We then walked around the grounds and ended up in the playbarn which at first glance looked very small but they had packed a great deal of fun into a small space. We had it to oursleves and when Emily couldn't face going down the death slide Tom just "had" to go on to help her summon the courage and then just "had " to have a go herself:-) Luckily we had the place to our selves and Alan even had a go.Just looked at this in preview and it is all going a bit strange! Not liking this new blogger image adding need to work it out but have no time now:-/

The outside of the castle had amazing graffitti on it.I think you would either love it or hate it.I loved it!

A train trip to the "Big city" for us country dwellers.Glasgow had Emily open mouthed at all the buildings and  enormous shops and hustle and bustle. We are definatley country folk.Tom loved it! We had made the trip specially for her and could have done with many more hours to explore the shops.Didn't get to see more than the shopping centre but may plan a trip in the future to see more of Glasgow.

Alan had seen some info about a Windfarm visitor center he thought would be interesting. The girls didn't agree:-) Tom very kindly offered to stay with Emily and they headed off to the beach whilst we took a longer drive than anticipated (one of those detours that always seem to occur on any journey we take!) really want to invest in a sat nav but Al won't hear of it,his argument is that we always get there in the end and don't need to spend so much money:-/
As it turned out it was quite an interesting visit, and a lovely site to walk amongst the turbines.Amazing how quiet they are.

Went to Pirate petes playbarn in Ayr and it was massive but Milly didn't really enjoy it.She was unhappy that two toddlers had shouted at her and then was concerned in case she went in to the wrong areas and went into the under fives play area by mistake:-/ Took a couple of walkrounds to show her she couldn't as it was all netted off but by then she had been put off.So out we went and found this outside for free! She played for over an hour and made a new friend! Tom sat with us chatting but couldn't resist trying some of the equipment out.

On the last morning we decided to visit another play area at Ardrossen to shake of the cobwebs before travelling. We had passed it a few times as we had been going out on day trips and she had wanted to go to  it.This trip involved a rather longer detour that we normally manage!!

Within half an hour of being home! PJ'S on and out on the swing making up stories:-)

Ayrshire Holiday..

We spent a week away at the beginning of the month in Saltcoats at the Park Resorts caravan Park. I can say little about the park that is positive! The staff we spoke to on reception were very friendly so it wasn't all bad :-/

To be honest I wasn't expecting luxury, the holiday was paid for using Tesco vouchers and we knew it was going to be basic accommodation. We had been keen to go to Edinburgh but our options for places to go in Scotland were limited to two sites, one of which didn't have heated caravans available. So Saltcaots it was.

The caravan was adequate. It was mainly just a base to explore the area and apart from Alan and Emily( I went once and the state of the changing rooms ensured I didn't venture there again!) using the swimming pool we didn't spend too much time on the actual site.

Tom came with us and brought along Brendan the guitar:-) He was very quiet during this holiday though =D

It was a very relaxed holiday, quiet mornings before setting out and about for the day and most nights we were all going to bed by 10ish.I was concerned that it was tooo quiet for Tom! The first couple of nights Milly's behaviour was really quite extreme, really hard to handle it and I lost my temper!Got past it and the rest of the week was fine..

We enjoyed a few games of Monopoly. Tom (with Emily as her team member) was the winner of the week with the highest total (remind me what it was again Tom!) Tom showed us a card game we hadn't played before called Go fish. We showed Tom Black jack and she had the idea to search for some poker chips and have a Las Vegas type game.

In the end we couldn't find them but Al got some coppers from the arcade change machine and we used them as our stake:-) Good fun and Tom was again overall winner. Alan then split the leftover money, so they both got to keep the coppers.

I have some pictures but they are on Emily's laptop (Tom had taken some with her camera when mine ran out of batteries and she has downloaded them onto the laptop) and for some reason blogger is not working properly when I log in on her account and I can't get the pictures when logged in on my account:-/

I have tried to use a memory stick to transfer them onto the PC but there is not enough memory on either of our sticks:-/ I have tried various other tactics like sharing the file on the laptop (says it is shared but can't find out where it is) no luck!!!! The next step is to transfer some of the pics with the memory stick and do it in two or three go’s. Hoping to do that soon. At the moment we are sitting together in the living room, me on here and Milly on the laptop. She is on MSN talking with Tom.

She likes me to be logged in on MSN as well and keeps sending me nudges and little love notes:-)

This post has taken me ages LOL.

Will try later to access the pictures and do a seperate post.

Adaptable Alan and weekend plans....

Milly often walks Beauty with Alan on an evening. They tend to set off from home and walk down the country lanes. On our way back home from our regular home ed group meet we talked about this evenings walk.I had gone with them last night and had a very pleasant walk while we played Emily's wolf game:-) I had said I  probably wouldn't go tonight because I was quite tired and didn't want to overdo it as we had all the packing to do tomorrow and then the journey to Northumberland on Friday (long weekend away, taking Emily's other best friend A with us) she was dissapointed and said she probably wouldn't go either.

When we got home and she had had time to think about it she said she did like going for the walks but it got so boring doing the same walks each evening.I asked where she would like to go and Buttermere was the answer,so she could go and see the place she had left the injured blackbird.I phoned Al at work to see if he was up for it, because it would get dark earlier they would need to set off as soon as he got home.I knew Al  had plans for tonight (nothing exciting! But jobs that he wanted to get done around the house before the weekend away) being the brilliant Dad  is, he said ,sure no problem:-) Within 5 minutes of coming home he was changed and they were off, with flasks of tea and snacks, towels and water shoes!

I have been doing some planning to try and fit as much as possible into the 4 days we are away.Travel time there and back from here obviously eats into that time.We have been to the same Caravan site many times and Milly has lot's of places she wants to show A.We are going to Beamish, which is a full day out on the Saturday so will have to be selective in the other places we go in the limited time we have.Hope the weather is dry so we can get to a couple of beaches we know are good for hunting fossils.

Monday night snapshot

Monday night Ten thirty:-

Friends coming round for a meditation group meeting tomorrow morning.I had baked the potatoes earlier today to make a sweet potato cake for them, when I realsided I had no eggs!Alan went to the farm on his way home but he was working late so didn't get home till 5.30 and we both had to get ready to go out.He was going to Tai chi and I was going to my weightwatchers meeting, dropping off Emily at my sisters on the way.Had to do some shopping before picking Emily up and didn't get home til 8.30.A couple of phone calls and a snack whilst watching Claudia and strictly take two on BBCi ,then set too making a cake!

Emily and Alan have gone up to bed and both animals have got the right idea and are snuggled up for the night:-)

Just leaves me to wait for the hour the cake takes to cook then off to bed for me too.xx

Masses of washing,Mp3 and mystery film!

We have a quiet day planned today. I have to wait in for a delivery this morning and a parcel is being collected this afternoon so an ideal opportunity for a lazy day. The holiday (will blog later) was a relaxed affair but I do still need time to catch my breath :-)

We did not seem to have a minute yesterday. Before we go away on hols we always have a good tidy (I do like to come back to a tidy house, even if it does not stay like that for long!) it seemed like a good idea to change the bedding so we could get into a nice fresh bed when we got home. It was indeed lovely to climb into a crisp clean bed on Saturday .However the mountain of washing we faced when combined with the clothes from holiday means we still haven’t got through it all! Spending the day turning clothing on all the radiators is not my idea of fun!

The other thing that took up lots of my time was much more fun! On holiday, Emily’s MP3 player was not working well and so we bought her a new one. As she wanted a shiny red one that was more than we had to spend she paid half from her holiday spends. Alan managed to get the old one working and decided he would quite like to have a selection of his fav songs on as he walked Beauty. So I spent the afternoon ripping Cds and then we created a play list for him. I did the weekly menus, a big job now, as I have to point everything (weight watchers) and then ordered online. I had seen some books in WH Smith whilst on hols, checked them out on Amazon, and added them to my basket. My basket now stands at £100! It needs editing but can’t decide what to save for later:-( Milly is so into wolves at the moment and I have found some great books with fab photography and I know I won’t be able to wait till Xmas to give her them!

Milly had suggested we all watch a film. I have been stocking up on films that we haven’t seen. Morrison’s have some great bargains from £2.99 and Milly chose The Davinci Code. Alan and I have both read the book (thanks Maria) and apparently, our nephew had said Emily would enjoy it, as she likes a good mystery! I had expected her to tire of it but she loved it! I had to spend some time talking her through some of the issues but we were amazed at how perceptive she was ,she was telling us what she thought would happen next and what she would have done in the situations they got into :-)She is keen to see Angels and demons now.

Alan went up to bed and we sat for a while watching the X Factor results I had recorded. Around 11 Emily decided to go up and listen to her story Cd which had got to an exciting part. The library are now doing Play away tapes which are a little like an MP3 player with the story on and all you need are the earphones. Great little things and no faff with loads of Cd’s which inevitably gets left in the various machines around the house, depending on where she is listening. One she took on holiday lasted 9 hours! Great for the journeys.

Milly has appeared and it is high time I got dressed and started the day!

Off on holiday!

We are heading off to the Ayrshire coast in the morning for a week in a caravan.Really, really looking forward to it:-) We are ready for a break; the last few months seem to have been stressful. No specific reason, but my hormonal imbalances have played a big part. Not only stressing me out but also the knock on effect is felt by both Alan and Emily.

Good news is that the homeopathy I had a few weeks ago has hit the spot and the flushes have almost gone. I cannot tell you what a relief it is. I don't think I am being overly dramatic when I say that I feel like I have my life back!

Just in time to enjoy a week away.
 Couldn’t have timed it better:-)

Bathtime snapshots:-)

A couple of mornings ago I got up and walked in to the bathroom to find this lovely little scene :-)

The next morning, two of her soft toys drying off, after being in the bath with her.

Emily has a love of animals, her particular interests at the moment are Wolves and cats (large or small). On a day out with Alan to get my Birthday present they went around all the charity shops and amongst other treasures, she manged to find a lovely book on cats. She has dipped into it herself over the last few weeks, but had obviously wanted Al to read it to her last night while she was in the bath.

This is the sight that normally greets me after Milly's bath, wet socks and other items of clothing, as she loves to get in with some clothes still on:-)

I often sit with her and read while she bathes/plays but Al has been with her the last few nights. I do love to find these little snapshots of the times I'm not with her.

Terry Deary in the Telegraph.

I have seen a couple of Blogs  here  and  here  mention a link to Terry Deary article in the Telegraph and finally got time to read it today.I thought it was worth another link :-))

Here is a snippet about his veiws on school!

"I get 200 requests a year and the answer is no,” he says. “I detest schools with a passion. I’d rather cut off my left arm and eat it with Marmite than go into a school. And I don’t even like Marmite.

“Schools are an utter waste of young life. Learning things that will never be any use to you. The only reason they are there is to keep kids off the street. They were a Victorian invention. The Industrial Revolution took kids from their families and made the parents work in factories long hours. Then they said, ‘we can’t have these little kids working here.’ So what do we do? Lock them all up in the same room all day and we’ll call it school. I spent hours learning trigonometry, physics, none of which prepared me for life. Relationships, talking to people, managing money, planning your career, how to help someone who has cut their leg open. I have had to learn these things by default.

“There won’t be any schools in 25 years. There will be mentoring. Older people passing their skills on to younger people. Teachers know nothing about life and the real needs of pupils.”

We are great  fans of the DVD's and TV series. We have lots of the books but Milly prefers the visual!
Full article is in the link above.

Potter mania. No not that one! The other one:-)

A few weeks ago, Milly found three Beatrix Potter videos in the charity shop for 20p each! A couple of nights prior to finding them she had asked Alan to read some of the stories again from her boxed set we bought her many years ago. We had talked for quite some time about visiting Hilltop (We had taken out a home educating family yearly pass to National trust properties when we visited Fountains Abbey in Ripon and haven’t used it yet.) seemed as good a time as any to do it.We decided it would be nice to visit the World of Beatrix Potter while we were in the area. The plan was to go to Bowness first and take the Car ferry over to save a twisty drive round the lake. I checked out all the details, opening times etc. I rang Hilltop to give them the seven days notice required as a Home ed member (due to a significantly reduced rate can only go with advance notice and in school hours, no school holiday or weekends) Alan booked a day off work as it was too far for me to drive.

Milly was looking forward to going, but on the two nights before we were to go she had trouble sleeping. She had been on two very long hikes with Al and Beauty on both days but was unsettled and was up till 11 and not asleep before 12 and then woke up quite a few times during the night. In hindsight probably coming down with something. So come the morning we had planned to go she was not on top form:-( Journeys longer than 45 minutes are difficult for her; she feels sick and add tiredness in to the mix and it becomes even harder. She will fight sleeping in the car(or anywhere for that matter)even when she is exhausted .

To cut a long story short we got to Bowness and not knowing where we were going, ended up missing the ferry turn off TWICE, Then we finally made it only to find the Ferry which runs all year round except in adverse weather conditions was closed, there was hardly a breeze!!! Then the plan we had had to have our picnic near the water before boarding was foiled when we realised we would have to pay £5 to park!! We were all hungry and pretty pissed off and Milly was feeling very inflexible! We talked about the passenger ferry's that were running but we didn't know how far from the  terminal Hilltop was and Milly wasn't keen on that one as it would make her sicker than the car one!She had been looking forward to getting out of the car and being near the water and we were just dreading  going back round to try and find a park near the lake as it was madness, so busy, Would really hate to see it in high season.

When we finally found a parking space Milly was quite vocal about her disappointment and decided it was horrible day, you get the picture! I went to the boot to get her walking boots and could quite easily have let rip. She was being so unreasonable.I was feeling annoyed that she was tired and had not gone to bed early.I could hear the negative voices in my head of people saying "oh well it's all well and good letting children choose when to go to bed but then this is what you end up with!"I knew it was illogical because even if I had "made" her go to bed at a set bedtime I could not have made her sleep!!

I choose to breathe deeply and then went round to her. She was angry and I could see it would only get worse. I asked if she would like a big hug, I know she wasn’t expecting that:-) She reached out, we hugged, I empathised with how she was feeling, she melted into me, and I could feel the anger ebbing away. I showed her a takeaway hut nearby and the fact that we could still sit out near the water for a picnic and even better, there was somewhere to get a cold drink. So not a great start, but we had a lovely time in The World of Beatrix Potter.Milly was around 3 the last time we went and it had been extended and had a new garden section. It had lost a very boring film I remembered from last time and had some interactive boards near the exhibits with details about the characters and stories.Lots of info about Beatrix and her life.We all found it enchanting and very atmospheric. We decided the journey around the lake to Hilltop was not an option and we would come back another time.
Now I obviously had to do a slideshow, I know, bear with me I am sure I will tire of them soon.. Practise makes perfect don’t they say.? Any how if your not a Beatrix Potter fan best to miss the next post.

I had to do them on separate ones because I couldn’t upload from blogger so took it from you tube. I got the slideshow over but all the text on the post disappeared!!! So I have re written this. Can I just point out there is no spell check on the new posting layout thingy. Not good ,I really need it ,especially late at night when the few brain cells that seem to be firing at the moment take a holiday as well.

Potter Mania. No not that one! The other one:-) The slideshow!

2007 Guidelines for Local Authorities on Elective Home Education.

Seems the 2007 Guidlines for Local Authorities on Elective Home Education have gone missing from the internet nowhere to be found.

Thanks to those people who had the foresight to save copies.

Linked back to Lisa
Just in case any poor soul arrives elsewhere and can't find them.
As they seem to have gone missing, why don't you link to them, too? In order that no-one slips through the net (and we know how important that is to Balls and co.) please link back to here - and to everyblogger else who does this.

Autonomous education works whatever your age!

When I set up this blog I was motivated and interested. As a computer novice,I sat for many hours working my way through all the steps.the initial bit was easy but the add ons and adding pictures etc was a real challange for me.I had many setbacks and was very frustrated on many occasions but I didn't give up.Each set back was a learning opportunity. However, I didn't always see it that way, there were times when I would sit for hours trying something out and not understanding why it wouldn't work. If there had been someone here who knew what to do, I would most definitely have asked for help and their knowledge would have made it easier for me.I would have got to the goal much quicker. The setbacks didn’t stop me.I persevered and because I really wanted to learn I kept coming back to it and giving it another go.

I think there does come a time when outside help may be needed when trying something new,but I don't think it should be the first step.Until you try something ,you will never know how far you can go.I gained so much  experience fixing the problems and confidence from working through it myself. The sense of achievement was huge.I am not too sure I would have had that if I had asked for help too soon.

At around the same time I started learning about the computer,I watched my brother in law's slideshows of holiday pictures with all the effects and music added.I loved the idea of doing them but  it looked difficult and  too technical for me.I had only just started using the computer.I was not ready; my confidence on the computer had not built up. My knowledge of computer language was not as informed as it is now, in short it was a step too far at that time.I knew I could have asked my brother in law to teach me but I didn’t really want to,I just wasn’t ready.

Over the last couple of years I have thought about doing them and then it has gone out of my mind again. In the last few weeks I have had the urge to do them again.I googled and came up with Photobucket and did one on there.Quite easy and very satisfying.Emily then mentioned that Tom did them on Windows Media player. I set out to learn.I was amazed at just how easy I found the whole process! It all slotted in to place so easily.Of course there were mistakes made and I learnt from them .Having a problem loading them via blogger meant I had to learn how to upload to You tube!
I spent my evenings so absorbed in learning that meals were late and I stayed up far too late, but I LOVED the whole process.

What had changed?

In the last few years my confidence in my ability on the computer has grown,I have more knowledge of how things work and what the language is.I have made connections and had hands on experience of making mistakes and knowing that I can work through them. I use the help facility and it no longer appears to be in a foreign language:-)

All this has meant that the time was right for me to challenge myself and importantly enjoy the process instead of being stressed and overwhelmed when it went wrong. I was in charge of the timetable ,I wasn't dancing to anyone else’s tune.I didn't once feel the need for someone to "teach" me.If a problem had been too hard for me to work out on my own I knew there were people I could talk to about it.That would have been an absolute last resort, because I really enjoyed the process of working things out.

Why would it be any different for any child who was truly interested and engaged in a topic they wanted to learn?

Update on spelling,reading and writing.

A little bit of history for anyone reading that is unfamiliar with our story.

Milly came out of school in year 3 when she was 8 ,after 4 years in the system. On the last parents evening we went to, the teacher informed us she had a reading age of 7 but had a spelling age of zero. They knew Emily had dyspraxia and yet it appeared to count for nothing. She said that even though she was given fewer words than the other pupils to learn she felt she was malingering and should try harder.I wish I could remember her words correctly but she said something about Emily using a charming smile when she got things wrong and that she wouldn't get away using it forever!!I nearly cried when she mentioned that smile because I knew that was what Emily did when she was embarrassed and didn't know how else to deal with a situation.

Here we were with a little girl who was sinking in the system and yet more pressure was being put on her than she could cope with.It seemed obvious to me that she had shut down and no amount of persuasion and spelling tests were going to improve her spelling.

Enough was enough and we took her out of school. For many months Emily would not pick up a pen.I know that had she stayed in school or had we continued the school at home route she would have learned to loathe books and writing.I look back and thank god that I had done so much research prior to her coming out of school and had found autonomous Ed/unschooling,or I might have been tempted to encourage her, because it was a very scary thing to let go completely and trust.I had many wobbles along the way but never once let her know how I was feeling.

Over the months we read to her constantly with no expectation for her to read at all.We spelled words for her if she asked. We enjoyed many great stories and played and visited and crafted and baked.Eventually she began to write again . Initially it caused great frustration leading to meltdowns and self criticism.

Here are a few excerpts from previous posts....

Milly has been seeing the shape of letters everywhere.
Now she has known her letters for many years ,having learnt them at school but over the last few weeks she has been seeing letter shapes in all sorts of places, the way a particular item is set out or a piece of string left on the table etc. Yesterday we were sitting in the living room discussing what to do with the day ( Emily had not gone to gymnastics and it is most likely she will not go back I realised after yet another morning where she didn't want to go that I had to allow her the choice and she was so happy, I feel I had pushed to encourage her when I should of let go a lot sooner, another lesson learnt.) and as we were talking she said "that's a w " and showed us the shape her legs had made so this led on to all of us making the alphabet together, what fun rolling about on the floor making the shapes. I am not sure what is going on for her but it seems she is making links in her own way and a clearer understanding of the shapes seems to be unfolding.
Alongside this she has been reading more by herself. She had stashed a load of her favourite books between her mattress and our bed and put the torch there and has been reading after I have left her as she informed me the other day!! She has also said she will read for ten mins to Al each night so she chose to look through a lovely book by Kate Petty and Jennie Maizels called The wonderful world book, it has lots of pop ups and facts and then Al started reading Phillip Pullman The Northern Lights, We generally have a book that Milly and I read and her and Al have one they read together.
Her use of language has continued to improve and I love it when she tries out a new word and a couple of days a go she went into the kitchen and on seeing two boiled eggs I had left on a plate set on top of a mixing bowl to cool called back "those eggs are a bit precarious" and proceeded to move them to a safer position. And yesterday she sat watching TV whilst she had her sausage sarni for breakfast and afterwards brought her plate through and said "that was a delightful breakfast"

Milly has continued to concentrate on her spelling and is using the keyboard more rather than asking me to do it for her.She is also going on education city and choosing the spelling options to do.I have been asked to spell words a lot but she has also been challenging herself and I can hear her sounding the words out to herself, she is using spellcheck on the PC when it is available on what she is doing.
It has taken a long time for this to happen, we have resisted the temptation to engage her in any form of writing she didn't want to do and I have always written for her or typed for her and have done so willingly.Gradually her confidence has grown and I believe we are seeing the process we would have seen had she been home educated from the start.

We had a bit of a melt down last night.Over the last few weeks Milly has been writing in a journal she has started and is choosing to write short amounts more and more and I had thought she was quite content to go along slowly. However, we watched Miss Potter last night and afterwards she was keen to get out a sketch pad and paints and set about drawing Beauty and to write a story about her, within minutes she was tearing up the paper and stabbing the pencil in the table and was really angry which then turned to tears and wails of why can't I write, I'll never be able to write. It was hard to watch and I don't think I handled things as well as I could of,I was tired and got angry when she started stabbing the pen down and regretted it immediately as it stopped the behaviour but also stopped her getting it out,I should of just done what we have done on other occasions and punched some cushions and had a good scream which helps her to get back on an even keel.We went to bed together and she seemed much better this morning. We talked about it and I said I felt I hadn't handled her anger very well and that it was OK to be angry but there were better ways to deal with it than damaging the table and she accepted that but suggested that next time instead of raising my voice I should just stay calm and encourage her to calm down and we could punch some cushions!!!

The first thing Emily wanted to do this morning was to write a story about the Bratz pixies, she asked me to write her words which I did and although it is not ideal for her she likes to see her story written out. When she writes herself she reduces the words she uses because it takes so long for her to write but when I write it she narrates beautiful intricate stories. We have talked about the possibility of recording the stories on a tape and then Alan or I typing them out and she did mention that again so I will look into it and see if it would be a viable option.I have also thought about the voice recognition software you can get for PCs but need to find out more about them.

When she was at school she was frustrated because she had no options and had to write whatever was set in the lesson and she felt so out of her depth and unsupported.I think she has become frustrated now because she is really wanting to record her thoughts and ideas and she sees her friends writing effortlessly in their journals and her limitations have been highlighted. It is a really positive thing that she is wanting to record things and we just need to ease the process so she doesn't get disheartened, she is such a perfectionist and is so hard on herself. She doesn't want to practice writing or spellings and I don't think for one moment that is the right way to go,she needs to go at her own pace but it is hard for her to believe that she will get there, she doesn't see the improvement in her writing and spelling since leaving school she just knows she has difficulty and that it makes her unhappy and hurts her hands:-(

It has been quite some time since the last excerpt but we have continued in exactly the same way.She once dictated an 18 page story, straight off, as I was typing, the whole thing just flowed out.It lost it's way a little but that is not the point,it was all about her confidence, not so much about the content or grammar. My mum bought her a voice dictator and if she wants, I will type things out for her.

We had a conversation in the early days, about whether writing neatly was important, she thought it was very important and I think she was shocked when I said I thought it was not so important.I explained that it was much more about her enjoyment of doing it,if she wanted to do it at all, freeing her self up from having to be perfect.I explained that she would get by in life with the writing she could do. I said that if it was easier for her, typing it out was a definite option. She didn't rush right in and start learning to type(nor did I say it with that expectation) but what she did do was to continue story telling without the feeling that it had to be written down or that it had to be a complete tale.Milly is a story teller, her head is full to bursting at times with tales to be told. Why should she stop, why do they have to be written down unless she wants to,would that mean she wasn't a storyteller just because they weren't written down?

I never correct her spelling, unless she asks me to.People think that if you don't tell them they will never know,I know by watching her on the computer when she is writing her stories how she looks at a word and knows it isn't right and will change it around till it looks tight to her and often it is then actually spelt right.Milly writes when she wants, what she wants, for how long she wants. She has about 100(OK slight exaggeration!)notebooks scattered around the house and drools in the stationary aisles in shops. She adores books and we are surrounded by them. She chooses bundles of second hand ones from the charity shop. She gets great pleasure from searching through them and buying them, far more than we could ever read to her.I don't dissuade her,it would be easy to think it was a waste of money because she may never read them herself,to my mind it is fostering a love of books that could last a lifetime, and when/if the time comes that she starts to read more herself, we will have a very good stock for her to go at:-)

She says she wants to be a writer when she grows up and her head is so full of stories. Not all the stories are finished in fact 99.9% are begun and discarded, whether that is on paper, in her head, told to us,or dictated on the machine.

I don't worry that she won't be able to put a story together if that is what she wants to do in the future. I see all this as practise and importantly practise in the way that works best for Emily,I have no clue how all this will fit together for her in the future. She is fine tuning her story telling and her writing is improving all the time.In fact there is little to choose between her writing and her schooled friend.

I have been through the school system,my handwriting isn't bad but it is not brilliant,I choose to type rather than write anything if at all possible.
I don't know all the intricacies of grammar and punctuation,if I really wanted to I would find out, just as Emily will if and when that need arises.I don't let it stop me rambling/writing on here, throwing in a comma where I think it looks right:-)

A few months ago we had arranged a visit with an educational psychologist. We had a few questions we felt needed answered but were not too keen to go down the diagnosis route(we didn't see the need now she was not in school)so the paediatrician organised the visit. Emily was used to seeing the paediatrician because she had been seeing her since birth(two months prem),and had had other tests done at the hospital to determine the level of her difficulty's(so the school would accept it and not have us down as being over anxious parents).

We explained that this visit was in connection with those visits and when he came(he visited us at home) she happily set about the tests he wanted her to do.Then Alan took her to play whilst I chatted with him about our concerns, which were much more to do with emotional/social issues.I did get the answers I needed from him, the point here though is that in his assessment he gave her a reading age of 10 (her age now) and a spelling age slightly below that.(We knew that both had improved and under normal circumstances would not have tested her)

So with us reading the books she chose for as long as she wanted us to,no lessons,no spelling tests,no constant repetition,no corrections other than the ones she asked for, read what she wanted, when she wanted, the ability to work in her way at her pace, she has managed to do what years in school had failed to do.

Emily does not care that she makes mistakes, sometimes she corrects them, sometimes she doesn't,sometimes she asks how to spell a word, sometimes she can spell a word one day and have forgotten it the next. She may never be a great speller luckily there is always spellcheck;-) She may well continue to be a great storyteller though.Time will tell whether that than becomes something she can earn a living from, who knows, that time is years away and in that time her interests will change,no point in predicting what she will do.

All I know is she is spelling well enough for anyone to understand her work,it is improving and much more importantly, although she knows her spelling is not always the best(by her own admission, not something that we have said) she enjoys writing and has the confidence to go ahead anyway and not let it get in the way of a good story.

Day out at Dubwath silver meadows.

There really is no stopping me!!!!

Not only have I taught myself how to do a slideshow on photobucket(pretty easy really)a few days ago. I have now taught myself how to do one on Windows Media player:-) Had problems uploading (seems from the little research I did that it is a problem a few are having with blogger)so decided I would find out how to upload on U Tube and voila here it is

Size is too big but will rectify that next time I do one.You know whats coming of course,at least till I tire of doing it:-))
